About
Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.
Established in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as the oldest golf course in Mississippi. That helps explain the course's peculiar greens.
In 1999, Great Southern Golf Club was renovated by Brian Curly, who took pains to keep Ross' square greens and still satisfy the USGA's specifications. The greens are minuscule, undulating and hump-backed with deep swales in the middle of some and wild, unexpected slopes in others.
No. 6, for example, is a 250-yard par-4, which appears easy enough, but there are big oaks on both sides of the fairways, a small, elevated green that slopes sharply left to right and bunkers left, front and behind.
Great Southern Golf Club measures 6,278 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 117 and a 69.7 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

Price and condition
The hot deal price was a bargain. Course condition has improved since last time I played.
A fun and scenic day of golf
I truly enjoyed the golf course. It has some great scenery on Holes 4 and 18 where you are hitting into the green with the Gulf of Mexico in the background. The course was designed by Donald Ross in an era without golf carts and other modern amenities so the holes are close together and a poorly hit shot can impact someone on another fairway. Conditions were not ideal, some thin spots on the fairways and some greens needed work, but considering they had just come out of winter, I felt the conditions were fair. Locals who played in front of me were very courteous allowing - really insisting - I play through since I was a single. 19th hole is a plus with a number of good local beers on tap. I will definitely play here again.
Enjoyable Track.
This is a flat old style course with no tricks, it's the only course I have ever played where you play the front 8 holes, cross a railway track, play 9 holes and then re-cross the track to play the 18th back to the clubhouse.
In good shape for the time of year.
Old school fun
Windy test of golf. Slower greens allow you to be aggressive. Two greens with small distressed areas but overall good greens. Will return next moth when in Biloxi.
This course is a joy to play
Really enjoy this course. One of my favorite in Gulfport. Tee boxes and fairways were in great shape but some of the greens and sand needed a little work but overall this course in in great shape. The staff here is always awesome and very friendly. The gentleman in the pro shop gave us the complete history of the course the fist time we played there. Playing Great southern is always a great experience.
GS
The course was decent shape but not what they charged me.
Good Value
I enjoy Great Southern. I enjoy the fact that its been here for so long. Easy to play and enjoy the weather. A couple of the greens had some rough spots on them, but the course was otherwise in good shape.
Golf 50 years ago
If you want a modern well groomed golf course, play else where. This is a classic Donald Ross 1908 golf course, with conditions to match. Some greens have substantial damage, but you can play around them.
Very enjoyable course.
everyone was friendly, and helpful. I enjoyed my round of golf and will return.
Fair for the money
If the rest of the courses are wet then give this one a try.
golf course starters was nice and friendly,Gas carts not needed, greens was good shape, fairways were ok ,tee boxes needed fixing up a little bitt ,but good course to play at. Too high price for the condition of the course
