Editor's Note: Course closed for business in 2022.
Established in 1908, the Great Southern Golf Club overlooks the Gulf of Mexico as the oldest golf course in Mississippi. That helps explain the course's peculiar greens.
In 1999, Great Southern Golf Club was renovated by Brian Curly, who took pains to keep Ross' square greens and still satisfy the USGA's specifications. The greens are minuscule, undulating and hump-backed with deep swales in the middle of some and wild, unexpected slopes in others.
No. 6, for example, is a 250-yard par-4, which appears easy enough, but there are big oaks on both sides of the fairways, a small, elevated green that slopes sharply left to right and bunkers left, front and behind.
Great Southern Golf Club measures 6,278 yards from the longest tees and has a slope rating of 117 and a 69.7 USGA rating. The course features three sets of tees for different skill levels.

Cheap Course - poor condition
Great Southern was in generally poor condition. Greens were very bumpy and slow. Cheap place if you just want to get a quick round in.
3 stars
Greens are very small and in bad shape. For the price, it's worth playing if your on vacation. It's the oldest course in MS, that's cool if youre looking for that aspect. If your an above average golfer, you're not going to be happy.
Played Fallen Oak Monday, it is top notch. Going from that course to this one is a huge drop. So that could be a factor......
Christmas Eve
What a nice day! Play was slow, weather was great, families playing golf. Price was crazy cheap on golf now. Greens are usually slow and sketchy, fairways are decent, tee boxes are average, f&b service is basically non existant. Conveniently located and because of that and the pricing, this track is a good value.
Greatly improved
Had not played this course in a few years and it is greatly improved. Still needs work on the greens but the fairways are better and it is still a challenging layout. Got a hot deal to play do it was a great value.
Not a good experience
I arrived about -30 mins early and no one was on the course a group of about 7 regulars was on the putting green. When I went in to check in I asked if I could go out in front of those 2 groups. I was told I made my tee time on GolfNow and I would honor that tee time. So I sit in my golf cart at my car for the next 15mins until that group went off. My group of two followed the groups of 4 & 3 the whole round.
Pretty area but course needs better care.
Sand traps were mud holes. Greens need work. Fairways were okay. Beautiful area with large oak trees and the bay in the background. Square greens are interesting.
OK for the price
The course needs some work, but for the price you can still work on your game. You get what you pay for.
Course was in better shape today, two days to dry out helped to get the mowers going
Greens need to be redone, slow and full of weeds, same with the fairways,No grass. With everything booming on the gulf coast,I don’t understand why there isn’t any more TLC spent on this course.Great location, with views of the Gulf. You can excuse no driving range or putting green, but really, the location demands more.
Poor conditions greens havn’t Been mowed in a week, same for fairways and tee boxes
This course deserves better management great location and layout, heartbreaking to see it in such sad condition
Okay course
Although it has been about 6 months since my last round, things could have been better. Tee boxes and fairways were on kind of long, maybe course is growing out some. Course layout is fun but lackluster. Greens were really slow and did not roll well, many had lots of dead spots. All in all i did not pay much and a bad day of golf is better than a good day at work.
Old style
Nice layout, good course for what I paid and the Gulf view is awesome. In town for a little R n R. I will play it again
Gulf views are awesome
Greens recently “punched”. Large sections of greens had thick sand, making it difficult to putt or Chip. Fairways were playable, but the rough had not been cut in a few days. Pro shop told me their equipment was not in working condition, but was being repaired.
Overall though course layout was good, views of the gulf was awesome on front nine, and the staff / snack bar was very friendly!
Bottom line, once greens heal and rough areas trimmed - this would be a very nice course to play! I will definitely play it again!!!
SLOWWWW GREENS
This is my first time back since 2014 and it was very disappointing. This course used to be my favorite course on the coast especially for the value. This course has turned for the worse. The course needs a lot of maintenance, not sure if it’s short staffed or going broke but it’s course was in bad shape. The greens were awful, big dead patches with holes in the greens made it almost impossible to putt even if you were a professional. Won’t be back for a while until something changes.
Great day for golf
Great course, friendly staff very accommodating. Will definitely go back next time I'm in Gulfport.
A fun day of golf on the Gulf of Mexico!
Our foursome arrived a little early and the staff let us go off early. We had a good time......whenever you can play golf it's a fun time! We all play a good round.
